The following is an overview of IMPORTANT DATES: - Feb. 8 – Mar. 3 - Major Saver Fundraiser The 2016 Major Saver Discount Card campaign launches Thursday, Feb. 18, in the Ray-Pec School District. Last year, students in the District helped the Raymore-Peculiar Public School Foundation raise more than $29,000. The $15 discount card offers 19 local buy-one-get-one-free offers. Proceeds from the card campaign benefit the participating schools and the Foundation. Card sales will occur in the elementary and intermediate schools starting Feb. 18 and continuing through March 3. More information: http://www.raypec.k12.mo.us/index.aspx?nid=976 - March 4 – No School, Staff work day What We Are Learning: ~ Math: We will be finishing up our unit on telling time. Our test over telling time is scheduled for this Wednesday. Students will be tested over their ability to tell time to the nearest 5 minutes, writing time, solving word problems for elapsed time, and differentiating between A.M. and P.M. We will also begin our next unit on estimating lengths using standard measurement units: inches, feet, meters, and centimeters. ~ Spelling Words: Spelling skill: -tion Our class test will be over List 1: direction, action, addition, question, dictionary, information, caption, pollination, vacation, motion The following are only for those students that are on List 2 challenge words: dictionary, combination, apparition, information, contemplation, ovation, celebration, distraction, confirmation, illustration ~ Reading: We are working with nonfiction/informational text and using nonfiction text features to help organize our information. ~ Writing: We have been writing opinion pieces using this strategy: 1. state the opinion 2. give 1 reason and an example 3. give a second reason and example 4. restate your opinion. This week we will be focusing on writing to persuade ~ Social Studies: We are learning about maps, globes, and continents! GOAL BINDERS As you know, word problems have been an ongoing challenge this year. We have been working on them throughout the year and are making slow and steady progress. I am placing varying levels of word problems in goal binders today for practice at home. Please work on a few each night with your child to increase our mastery of this skill. Have a great week!
